Helping to Support Teaching and Learning

Sufficient Materials: Includes enough material for 60 pupils, ensuring every child can participate fully in the activity.
Supporting Literature: Scroll down for a downloadable lesson plan, PowerPoint, pupil worksheet, and ‘how to’ blog, aiding teachers to deliver effective lessons.
Key Stage 2 Focus: Ideal for key stage two pupils, aligning with curriculum aims to teach forces and motion through practical activities.
Hands-On Learning: Encourages hands-on learning by allowing children to build, test, and optimise their own balloon buggies.
Teaching Forces: Supports teaching forces by helping children understand air resistance and friction through interactive experiments.

A STEM kit for 60 pupils to make, test, and improve balloon buggies using their science and DT skills.

Investigate forces and motion that make things move, understand mechanical systems in products, and compare the average speed of buggies.

This balloon making kit helps children understand forces and motion through hands-on activities. They will mark and cut a base, attach straws as bearings, fit axles and wheels, and attach a hose and balloon. When the balloon is inflated, the buggy zooms across the room, demonstrating forces that make things begin to move, get faster or slow down.

Children can add passengers, decorate their buggies, and optimise performance by reducing friction. They can also calculate and compare the average speed of their buggies.
The kit includes a lesson plan, PowerPoint, pupil worksheet, and a blog. Created by mechanical engineer Caroline Alliston, it supports classroom science experiments and STEM challenges for up to 60 children.
